For more than a quarter of a century, Pat Schneider has helped writers banish fear, beat writer’s block, and create lasting work in her workshops and books. During that same time, Diane Garey and Lawrence R. Hott of Florentine Films/Hott Productions, Inc. have produced thought-provoking works for Public Television on topics ranging from the history of nurses in America to the philosophical roots of today’s environmental movement. This DVD companion to Schneider’s book, Writing Alone and With Others from Oxford University Press, marks the second collaboration between these artists.

The DVD features two hours of material for writers working at all levels. Pat Schneider and her senior colleagues discuss the Amherst Writers and Artists (AWA) method, one that has worked for thousands of writers – the award winning, the struggling, and those who have been silenced by poverty and hardship. Pat Schneider and several AWA workshop leaders present a virtual workshop – thirteen writing exercises and responses that can be used in workshops, classrooms, and by the writer working alone. The DVD also includes Florentine’s award-winning film “Tell Me Something I Can’t Forget,” a portrait of Schneider’s work with women in public housing in Chicopee, Massachusetts.

Writers will find this DVD to be an invaluable tool for unlocking their words and developing their craft. Teachers and workshop leaders will find it to be an indispensable resource, with general advice on approach and methodology, and specific insights into working in a variety of settings -- prisons, cancer support groups, children’s programs, adult education programs, and workshops for the general public.

In the Forward to Writing Alone and With Others, Peter Elbow says that Pat Schneider is “the wisest teacher of writing I know.” Julia Cameron calls her “gentle, playful, brilliant and revolutionary.”

This DVD offers a firsthand look at her wisdom, her brilliance, and that bit of revolution that she has inspired in writers everywhere.
